Dan Cnossen

& U.S. Navy Seal Lt. Commander

Winning Gold: How I Overcame Fear and Adversity to Achieve a Breakthrough Life

A true patriot, raised on the farmlands of Kansas, early on Dan knew he wanted to serve his country.  Upon graduating high school, he was accepted at the U.S. Naval Academy and spent the next four years relentlessly pursuing selection for SEAL training.  One of only 16 members of his class given the opportunity to enter Basic Underwater Demolition / SEAL training as officers, Dan successfully completed the grueling process in the fall of 2003.

Over the next six years, Dan was deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan and rose in rank to become the officer-in-charge of an 18-man SEAL platoon.

In 2009, Dan was deployed to Afghanistan, into an area of heavy combat.  There, on a night mission in the mountains, he stepped on an IED, losing both legs in the blast.  He would later be awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor.

For the next two years, Dan fought for his life, enduring over 40 different surgeries while readjusting to civilian life.  It was during this time, as part of his rehab, that he was introduced to the sports of cross-country skiing and biathlon.  Never one to shy from a challenge, he eventually earned a spot on the 2014 U.S. Paralympic Team.

In 2015, Dan returned to graduate school, earning two degrees from Harvard University.

At the 2018 Paralympic Games, Dan stole the show, remarkably winning one gold, four silver, and one bronze medal over a period of eight days earning the honor of Best Male Athlete of the Games.

Invisible Solutions: 25 Lenses that Reframe and Help Solve Difficult Business Problem

What if your organization had an effective systematic approach for dealing with any problem? To get there, you have to understand that to find better solutions, you need to first ask better questions. Otherwise, the answers you seek will remain hidden.

Best-selling author and sought-after strategist, Stephen Shapiro, will teach you how to reframe any problem in multiple ways, using 25 lenses to help you gain critically different perspectives. He will help you discover why we are hardwired to ask ineffective questions, how to reframe any problem to help you find the optimal solution, and how to move from idea-based innovation to a question-based innovation that drives a higher ROI. In his talk on Invisible Solutions, which is also the title of his latest book, Stephen will help you quickly discover better solutions to solve any problem in business and in life.

Stephen is well-known for cultivating innovation by showing leaders and their teams how to approach, tackle and solve their business challenges. Applying the knowledge he has accrued over decades in the industry, Stephen is able to see what others can’t: opportunities to improve innovation models and the cultures that support them.

The first innovation opportunity Stephen spotted was the opportunity to innovate within his own life. Halfway through his 15-year tenure at Accenture, while co-leading the company’s business process reengineering practice, he realized he no longer wanted to be responsible for people losing their jobs. So he did exactly the opposite by building Accenture’s thriving 20,000-person process and innovation practice focused on growth and job creation.

In 2001, after publishing his first book, 24/7 Innovation, Stephen left Accenture to become a full-time innovation speaker and advisor to clients around the world. Since then he has published four more books – Goal-Free Living (2006), The Little Book of Big Innovation Ideas (2007), Personality Poker (2010) and Best Practices are Stupid (2011) — and spoken to audiences in 50 different countries. His sixth bookInvisible Solutions, came out in early 2020.

Today, Stephen continues to focus on transforming the way businesses like 3M, P&G, Marriott, Nike, and Microsoft improve innovation practices through customized keynote speeches, advisory engagements and other services. Passionate and captivating, Stephen’s high-energy approach to innovation gets audiences out of their seats and into new ways of thinking about their business challenges.

Stephen just finished serving a six-year term on the Board of Directors of National Speakers Association (NSA) and is the recipient of the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation, NSA’s highest earned designation. In 2015 he was inducted into the Speaker Hall of Fame.

Stephen has a degree from Cornell University in Industrial Engineering, which has helped him optimize the entire innovation process using the engineering techniques he learned there.

He was also involved with Girl Starter, a movement that encourages and enables young women to launch their own businesses. He was a judge and mentor on the television show (TLC) and has supported the speaking tour and other endeavors.

Stephen is based in Orlando, Florida and loves traveling to meet his clients around the world.

FAQS

Have a question about the event? We have answers!

How is the Freedom at Work Leadership Summit different from other events out there?

Most events take a generic look at how to improve your culture, only addressing best practices or the design of an organization, falling short of actually talking about ALL that it takes to build a truly world-class company.

The Freedom at Work Leadership Summit teaches leaders the proven Freedom at Work model, which addresses the mindset, leadership skills AND organizational design of a business in order to have growth, a world-class culture, and make a difference in the world.

The Freedom at Work Leadership Summit is also more than just a few days of listening to a random group of speakers. We actually train you in the proven Freedom at Work model and give you tips and ideas for how to immediately implement it into your organization. Think of it as both a training and an opportunity to hear from thought-leaders and CEOs actually practicing Freedom at Work. You will leave inspired, energized, and loaded with new ideas around a proven (not generic!) approach.

Lastly, the Freedom at Work Leadership Summit is also an incredible global community of some of the most forward-thinking thought-leaders, CEOs, and executives in the world with shared values and a shared commitment to more freedom and less fear in our workplaces and our world.
