The Weekly Democracy at Work Tip: 1-800-GOT-JUNK?

gotjunk1Beginning this week, I’ll be bringing you a ‘Democracy at Work Tip” which will be filled with best practices, fresh ideas and inspired insights from the companies on the WorldBlu List of Most Democratic Workplaces 2009. My hope is that their examples will provide you with democratic solutions to some of your most pressing business challenges.

This week we will take a look at the company 1-800-GOT-JUNK? and explore their democratic practice of the principle dialogue and listening.

Q: How can I get my employees to create more dialogue in the workplace and listen to one another’s views?

A: Every morning, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? has a “huddle,” which is a stand-up meeting that all staff are encouraged to attend. It’s an opportunity to share good news, review metrics, and discuss opportunities and areas for improvement. It always ends with a cheer to start the day on a happy note. During huddles, every employee has the chance to share a positive thought, speak out about something that’s not working, or to offer up a suggestion. Any employee can sign up to be the “Huddle Master”, who hosts the huddle.

Perhaps having a “Huddle” at your workplace can help improve communication and give employees an opportunity to share ideas and good news as well. If you’re not already doing a huddle in some form, maybe now is a good time to start!
