When we sat down to design the logo for the WorldBlu List of the Most Democratic Workplaces™ we knew we wanted it to have symbolic meaning. We wanted it to capture the spirit of democratic organizations and pay tribute to their role as purveyors of a new breed of thought.
Ok, so that doesn't exactly point to a blue fish at first blush!
But as we continued to think about the qualities we wanted this logo to symbolize, the blue fish appeared one day in a flash of insight. Here's what the blue fish means to us and why we chose it as our icon for the most democratic workplaces in the world:
A NEW SCHOOL OF THOUGHT
Ok, maybe this sounds a bit cheesy but it's true: Organizations that choose to operate using the principles of democracy rather than command-and-control techniques represent a "new school" of thinking about the future of work. And since fish swim in schools, we thought a fish was the perfect representation of the new school (and next generation!) of organizational design and leadership.
THE COLOR OF FREEDOM
The fish in the WorldBlu List of Most Democratic Workplaces™ logo is not just blue because we like the color (or because it fits with our name!). We made it blue because the color blue is universally recognized as the color of freedom. Democratic organizations like those on the WorldBlu List are freedom-centered organizations, and the blue fish symbolizes this freedom.
LIVING SYSTEMS
Democratic organizations are living organizational systems, not static or mechanistic entities as most organizations think they are. They thrive. They're alive. They have a pulse. The fish in our logo is a living and dynamic organism that captures the alive quality of democratic workplaces around the world.
