Defining and measuring something like democracy in the workplace can be tricky. We recognize that there are countless definitions of democracy and countless ways of practicing it at work.
A DECADE OF RESEARCH
We've spent a decade researching organizations all over the world that practice organizational democracy. Along the way, we developed a set of principles that we use to gauge the presence of democratic practices within an organization. The result of this research has been the development of the WorldBlu Democratic Workplace Scorecard™.
A PRINCIPLE-BASED APPROACH
Our approach to measuring democracy within a workplace is principle-based rather than practice-based. In other words, we believe that measuring the presence of democratic principles, rather than a standard set of practices, acknowledges that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to practicing democracy in the workplace.
EVALUATED WIDE AND DEEP
In order for an organization to be on the WorldBlu List of Most Democratic Workplaces™, employees throughout the organization are surveyed using the online WorldBlu Democratic Workplace Scorecard™. The WorldBlu Scorecard evaluates an organization from these two angles:
- WIDE - 10 PRINCIPLES. The WorldBlu Scorecard evaluates an organization based on ten principles of organizational democracy such as the level of transparency, accountability, decentralization, and choice practiced throughout the organization.
- DEEP - 3 LEVELS. The WorldBlu Scorecard evaluates how well an organization practices these ten principles of organizational democracy on an individual level, leadership level, and systems and processes level.
A CONTINUUM OF DEMOCRACY
We believe there is a continuum of democracy and the degree to which it's practiced can vary considerably. We're looking to recognize the MOST democratic workplaces in the world, the standouts, the super-stars, and the model organizations that have demonstrated a level of democratic mastery throughout their organization.
