Fantastic Video on Semco, One of the World’s Most Democratic Workplaces

Here’s a fantastic video on Semco, one of the most democratic companies in the world (the video won’t embed, so please just click on the link. So worth it!). The short video explores how workers choose their own salaries, the open financials, how their business units work, democratic hiring/firing and how freedom creates a dynamic peer pressure that makes it all work. It also explores Semco’s CEO, Ricardo Semler’s newest projects, a democratic school and a resort that’s built democratically as well. I continue to be so inspired by Semco.

Have you seen the new (Dec/Jan) Fast Company? The cover is “Cisco gets Radical-How CEO John Chambers is Turning the Tech Giant into a Socialist Enterprise.” One of the quotes in the article says “the ‘collaboration marketplace’ could be a $34 billion opportunity [so if it's radical] its radicalism [has a] reassuringly capitalist bent.”
    A really interesting article!
Thanks for sharing the video. Very inspiring.

    Traci,
That IS a great video. Clearly some lessons there our co-op could use.
Have you read either of the CEO’s books?
I’ve asked the Equal Exchange librarian to get the more recent one — “The Seven Day Weekend”.

Awesome Traci! I’m stoked to have found your company website while surfing for quotes by Ricardo Semler. I’m a huge fan (an acolyte of sorts) of he and his concepts on the democratic workplace. To discover that a person started a company dedicated to extolling the virtues of democracy….I’m blown away!

Democratic practices are central to our organization because empowered, happy owners run amazing and profitable bakeries. The longevity and success of our company speaks volumes about the value of democratic principles in the workplace.
